About Us

The priory is a renovated historic building located on a presqu'ile in the picturesque Tarn Valley in Southwestern France. Perched on top of the hill at the end of the road, the building overlooks the quaint village of Ambialet (population 41!), where time seems to have stood still. You can't help but feel a wave of calm at Le Prieuré as you peer into the valley and hear the rumble of the waters below.

We are just 25 minutes outside of Albi, a UNESCO World Heritage City, and less than an hour and a half from the city of Toulouse. The whole of southwestern France is at your fingertips!

Our History

The priory in Ambialet dates back to the 11th century. It was founded by the Benedictines and the building was constructed in various stages throughout the centuries, with the most recent additions coming in the late 19th century. The adjacent chapel, Notre Dame de l'Auder is a romanesque-style church. In 1865 the priory was taken over by Franciscan friars who moved in and for many years ran a seminary and boys' school. The building remained under the protection of a caretaker for many years until the site was leased to Saint Francis University in Loretto, PA, USA in 2007. Under their care much of the building has been renovated and the building is once again occupied by students during the school year. During their time in France, Le Prieuré is their home away from home and we organize various excursions and activities for the students to discover French language, history, culture and lifestyle.

Le Prieuré has been enchanting groups since 2007. Past groups include:
Saint Francis University semester and summer programs
Pittsburgh Center for Arts (retreats in photography, writing, etc)
Curry College nursing students
Bishop Guilfoyle high school students

Dickinson College art students
West Chester University painting students

Tim
The magician behind the curtain at Le Prieuré is Tim Perkins. He arrived on site over 10 years ago to conduct extensive renovations of the building and has been in Ambialet ever since. From transportation, entertainment and logistics, Tim is available to help with advice on opportunities available to any group staying at Le Prieuré. More memorably, Tim is a real treasure trove of stories and he will often spend the evening chatting over a glass (or two) of local Gaillac wine.
